How Adult Driver's Ed Works
Completing the online course is just the first step. Here’s the full process from obtaining your learner’s permit all the way to driving away with your Virginia license.
Before anything else, visit your local Virginia DMV Customer Service Center to get your learner’s permit.
What to bring and do
- Pass the vision test
- Pass the knowledge and road signs tests
- Bring the required identification documents
Complete all 30 hours of lessons, activities, and quizzes through our Virginia DMV-approved online driver education program — 100% online, self-paced, on any device.
Upon completion
- Your Driver Education Completion Certificate will be emailed to you immediately
- Progress is saved automatically — pick up where you left off
- Available any time of day or night, on any device
After completing the online course, you’re eligible to enroll in the Adult Waiver Program with a certified driving school. To participate, you must:
Requirements
- Be at least 18 years old
- Hold a valid Virginia learner’s permit
- Have completed a Virginia-approved driver education course
The Adult Waiver Program requires completing professional behind-the-wheel training. Drive times are purchased separately from this online course and completed in-person at a driving school.
What training includes
- 7 driving sessions — 50 minutes of active driving each
- 7 observation sessions — 50 minutes of observation each
- Professional instruction from a certified driving instructor
On the final day of your driving sessions, your certified instructor will conduct a road skills evaluation to determine whether you can operate a vehicle safely. This evaluation serves in place of the traditional DMV road skills test — you do not need to schedule a separate DMV road test.
What to expect
- Conducted by your certified driving instructor on your final session
- Tests your ability to operate a vehicle safely and confidently
- Passing means you skip the DMV road skills test entirely
After successfully completing all training requirements and passing your final evaluation, the driving school will issue your Adult Waiver Certificate.
About your certificate
- This certificate verifies you have completed all required training and passed your evaluation
- You will need to bring it to the DMV to receive your driver’s license
Once you complete all program requirements, your completion is reported directly to the Virginia DMV. Your permanent driver’s license will be mailed to you — no DMV visit required.
What happens next
- Your completion is reported to the Virginia DMV automatically
- Your permanent driver’s license is mailed to you within approximately 20 days
